Solid Waste Management in Phnom Penh faces widespread difficulties in both the collection and disposal of solid waste.  Reports suggest that a majority of households in areas outside the central districts of Phnom Penh have at best sporadic collection of solid waste and many areas have no formal collection of household waste at all. The accumulated waste fouls bodies of water that are often used as water sources, negatively impacts public health, releases toxic gases during burning, and reduces the overall livability of communities.
