The 3 day training workshop on "Participatory Planning on Reduction of Short Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCPs) from Waste Management in Battambang Municipality, Cambodia" on June 10-12, 2014 at City Hall of Battambang City was prepared by COMPED's Waste Management Projects Group in cooperation with Battambang Municipality; Institute for Global Enviromental Strategies (IGES) from Japan; Institute of Enviromental Development and Technology Transfer (IET) and Phitsanulok Municipality from Thailand. There are total 39 persons attended the training workshop including chairmen from Battambang municipality, trainers from Thailand, staffs from the Battambang Municipality, COMPED, waste collection company's staff and Boeng Chhouk market's staff.

Objectivers of the training workshop

 

The objectives of this participatory workshop are:

 

  1. To raise awareness on Reduction of Short Lived Climate Pollutants(SLCPs) from Waste Management

  2. To update about Solid Waste Management in Battambang City and its impact on enviroment and living organism including field visits to markets and landfill to let the participants capture the image of the issues and the complex impact in solid waste management in Battambang city.

  3. To actively participate in identifying the problem in waste management, get the introduction of applied Community Based Solid Waste Management (CBM)

  4. To be able to do Cost/Benefit Analysis in waste management

  5. To be able to development of own Vision, Policy and Strategies for Battambang City

  6. To understand Win-win approach in CBM: Polluter Pays Principle, Fee collection

  7. To prepare Solid Waste Management City Planning (associate with SLCP emission reduction)

 

Progres of the workshop

 

First day, Registration and Opening worksho, Participants take photos, Invited delegations to the even's front table, Open speech of Mr.Sieng Em WounZy, The present from Dr.Suthi to Mr Sieng Em Wounzy, Ice breaking, vitit landfill and markets, participants' expectation, Administrative detail of training Training content and Pre-test,

 

Second day, Analysis of problem related to municipal solid waste management in Battambang city, Group discussion, Presentation on groups' discussion, Exercise: Waste Composition workshop and waste separation, Dr,Suthi's Presentation: about Community Based Solid Waste Management (CBM), Exercise: Main actors and their relation, divide four groups. Exercise: Cost benefit analysis, divide 4 groups.

 

Third day, Group discussion on Development of own Vision, Policy and strategies of waste management in Battambang city in 4-5 year later, divide 3 groups, Movie clip about "waste is more than waste " and Group discussion Solid waste management city planing with conclusion by Dr.Suthi and Dr.Janya sharing their perspective, experience and very positive perception of the outcome of the workshop.

 
Conclusion
 

This training workshop on "Participatory Planing on reduction of short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) from waste management in Battambang municipality is good because:

  1. Participants

    • They come from different institiutes
    • They had strong commitment and actively participated into worksho session
    • They shared their experiences and ideas
  2. Presentation are new concept and new experiences in Battambang city in preparing participatory planning on improving municipal solid waste management in Battambang city.

  3. Training approach: it was quite good strategy using simple Exercises, Video, Drawing Games and Group Discussion to make the training more fruitful. The participants were participated without bored or tired. Then they were so happy to learn, understand and able to share this knowledge.

  4. The participants get certificates that identify they have attended the workshop on "Participatory Planning on reduction of short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) from waste management in Battambang municipality".
