CONTRIB Concept for waste water treatment and implementation of a Pilot plant in Battambang Project Summary According to the development priorities for Cambodia wastewater treatment is one of the most pressing problems in Cambodia. Unregulated domestic and industrial wastewater flows are contaminating natural wetlands and the river system. In particular, surface waters used as sources for drinking water are often contaminated by unregulated wastewater emissions. It has been estimated that 30% of all hospital cases are due to waterborne diseases and contaminated food. The idea of our project is to contribute to a knowledge and technology transfer in order to reduce the pollution of surface and ground waters in the area of Battambang. This will lead to a direct reduction of nutrient emissions at the demonstration site by about 90%. The intended duration of the project is two years, starting in January 2007. Expected Results -Evaluation of hydraulic data and wastewater loads of Battambang area, -A contribution to the network of observatory stations. -An operating pilot treatment plant with a capacity up to 5000 inhabitant equivalents, -Improvement of environmental competence of the local administration and -In crease of environmental awareness of the local community. What are our main activities? 1.Data collection and evaluation in the fields of -hydrology of wetlands and river systems (incl modelling), -wastewater discharge and loads, -economic, social, and administrative impacts.
2.Elaboration of a wastewater management concept -design of a master plan for Battambang. 3.Construction of a pilot wastewater treatment plant (Capacity of up to 5000 inhabitant equivalents) with following steps: -location analysis & planning, -construction (see scheme), -testing phase and -public relation and multiplication. 4.Performance of training seminars On-site seminars with a capacity of 20 persons Modules (each 1 week) will correspond to activities 1., 2., and 3.Attending civil servants will gain an introductory knowledge on the whole process of planning, implementing and running wastewater treatment plant. Occurring day-to-day problems during the implementation of CONTRIB will be directly integrated into the seminars. Build-up seminars in Germany with a capacity of 3 persons per year: Participants will stay in Germany for two weeks and attend two further Modules in order to intensify some aspects Module 1 is concerned with strategies for sewer network planning.Excursion to a wastewater treatment plant operator and sewer construction sites are included. Module 2 is concerned with water quality and wastewater treatment.Participants will also make an excursion to the ecological pilot city “Ostritz” and attend an introductory laboratory course. |
